Swenam College is one of the very few private institutions that offers a range of awards and scholarships to both domestic and international students. New students applying to any program at Swenam College can apply for entrance awards, scholarships, and grants.
Existing students at the college may also be eligible to apply for continuing student awards. Award recipients are expected to serve as representatives for Swenam College and take part in outreach and alumni engagement activities. All awards will be disbursed in the form of a tuition credit. The Delivery is done through:
- Distance education: 100% hours of instruction, excluding work experience hours, if applicable, delivered remotely from a BC location.
In-class instruction: 100% hours of instruction delivered in a classroom or other setting, where instructors share the same physical space as students.
- Combined delivery (both in-class and distance): Instruction provided through a combination of in-class and distance delivery.
- Full-time: the total duration of this program is 16 weeks.
- Part-time: the total duration of this program is 24 weeks.
General Admission Requirements
This program is suitable for diverse applicants, with or without prior experience in Taxation and Payroll Administration or, more broadly, Accounting; the program is available to applicants with prior higher qualifications.
English Language Proficiency Admission Requirements is one of the following:
- IELTS Academic: 5.5 overall
- TOEFL iBT: 46 overall
- CAEL: 40 overall
- CELPIP General: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, Writing 5

- Completion of 2 years of secondary education in English, including English 10 & 11 with a grade of “C” or higher, in a country where English is a principal language

Canadian Taxation I: Personal Taxation
This introductory course, Canadian Taxation I: Personal Taxation, is a comprehensive course that will provide students with the knowledge and abilities required to successfully navigate the complexities of the Canadian Tax System.
Canadian Taxation II: Corporate Taxation
This course explores the fundamentals of corporate taxation in Canada. It covers a variety of topics, including the complexities of preparing corporate tax returns, the tax implications of different business structures, and business-specific tax planning strategies.
Bookkeeping Foundation 1
The Canadian Taxation and Payroll Administration Certificate program begins with a bookkeeping introduction course that is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in the essential principles and practices of bookkeeping.
Bookkeeping Foundation 2
In the Bookkeeping Foundation 2 course, students will expand upon the knowledge acquired in Bookkeeping Foundation 1, aiming to deepen their understanding and expertise in bookkeeping practices, particularly focusing on advanced techniques vital for effective financial management.
Accounting Software and Technology
The course “Accounting Software and Technology” provides the learners with proper knowledge of the tools and techniques used in accounting, data security and efficiency. Some of the core areas of focus in this course include the key types of accounting or bookkeeping software, incorporation of technology in the process of bookkeeping and how to do payroll, and the concept of data management and its security.
Payroll Administration Essentials 1
Building upon foundational bookkeeping skills, this course offers a more comprehensive exploration of accounting concepts, with a particular focus on cultivating a diverse skill set and expertise essential for roles within payroll departments.
Payroll Administration Essentials 2
Building on the foundational knowledge gained in Payroll Administration Essentials 1, this course explores the complexities of payroll management in greater depth.
Canadian Practices and Ethics
The course "Canadian Practices and Ethics" provides a thorough overview of the fundamental information and abilities required to successfully navigate the complexity of Canadian small business finance and accounting.
Capstone Project
This is a culminating course, designed to synthesize and apply participants’ learning in the Canadian Taxation and Payroll Administration certificate program to a real-world setting.
Upon completion of this program the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Recognize and apply fundamental principles of Canadian Taxation and Payroll legislation.
- Calculate gross and net pay accurately, including deductions of taxes benefits, and other withholdings.
- Process payroll accurately and on time using industry-standard payroll software.
- Demonstrate knowledge of local, state, and federal tax laws and their requirements for compliance.
- Prepare and submit payroll payments along with tax forms and records.
- Investigate employee benefits and their influences on payroll.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure data integrity.
- Utilize spreadsheet software to manage and analyze payroll data effectively.
- Conduct year-end processes, including issuing T4s and other relevant tax forms.
