Swenam College is one of the very few private institutions that offers a range of awards and scholarships to both domestic and international students. New students applying to any program at Swenam College can apply for entrance awards, scholarships, and grants. Existing students at the college may also be eligible to apply for continuing student awards. Award recipients are expected to serve as representatives for Swenam College and take part in outreach and alumni engagement activities. Admission Requirements

Education

  • Post secondary degree or diploma in engineering, construction or relevant field.
  • Exemption: Post-secondary degree or diploma in a non-relevant field for applicants with 5 years experience in construction management. Language Language Proficiency
  • Successful completion of BC English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (or equivalent) with a final grade of 65% (C) or better (including the provincial exam if applicable) taken in Canada as part of a high school graduation program
  • Completion of International Baccalaureate English A1/A2 or English Literature and Performance
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) general or academic, minimum overall band 6.0, with no individual band score less than 5.0 or equivalent
  • TOEFL iBT 72 overall with minimum of 18 in each component
  • Exemption: University Degree (4 years or more) with English as instruction language.
Courses Outlines

BE01 | Building Economics
This course focuses on the economic side of property development, investment and finances.  This course contemplates the basic estimating skills of a construction project manager to help them understand the extended cycle of their project investments. In this course, students will learn about development processes, site analysis and selection, market studies, estimating development cost, developing integrated financial cash flow, land development, lease, buy or build analysis, project economics during construction, financial modelling using MS Excel, risk analysis. In addition, students will learn developing basic feasibility studies for construction projects, Analyzing financing arrangements and life-cycle costing associated with the economics of development.

BI01 | Introduction to Building Information Modelling (BIM)
This course works as an introduction to the world of BIM through learning the basics of Autodesk Revit in an architectural environment, from design through construction documentation. Students will be introduced to the tools and concepts of working with a fully parametric building modeler.

BI02 | Advanced Building Information Modelling (BIM)
Building on the knowledge and skills gained through the course “Introduction to BIM’’, this course covers the advanced concepts of Autodesk Revit in an architectural environment. Gives students greater familiarity with the breadth of Revit Architecture's feature set.

CR01 | Canadian Construction Laws and Regulations
This course provides students with a general overview of Canadian contract and construction law. Major topics include the interpretation of contract terms, specifications and the application of construction law to the business of construction. The course content also relates these legal concepts to practical issues in the construction process. This course is designed to familiarize students with the liabilities and responsibilities of different roles (owners, engineers, contractors … etc.) when it comes to engaging in a construction contractual relation. Topics include compiling and submitting variation orders, extras and the participation in managing legal disputes.

CR02 | BC building Codes

This course provides students with the knowledge to use the British Columbia Building Code as well as city zoning bylaws.

Students will be familiar with the latest version of BC Building Code, its sections and application. Students will learn to apply the regulation covered by divisions A, B and C. Topics include Compliance, Acceptable Solutions and Administrative Provision.

In addition, students will learn an overview of the requirements and bylaws of BC Municipalities for building zoning, residential wood framed building construction standards, design specifications, fire protection, basic structural standards and other professional practices which may affect the design and construction of a building. Students will also use AutoCAD to create site plan, floor plans, sections and elevations.


CR03 | Fire Fighting Codes for Construction Projects
This course introduces the most used international and national fore fighting codes in Canada with emphasizes the local BC code (BC Fire Code). This course provides students with general understanding of the structure and layout of the BC Fire Code. This course provides an overview of the fire safety requirements in and around buildings with an introduction to Division A, Division B and Division C of the BC Fire Code.

CR04 | Safety in Construction Sites
This course provides an introduction to selected laws concerning environmental protection and construction safety. Key statutes, regulations and policies that relate to environmental management and construction safety in BC are examined in the context of industrial/commercial facilities, brownfields and new urban developments. The course reviews the relevance of environmental legislation as it relates to issues such as air and waste quality, hazardous waste management, site assessment and cleanup, emergency planning, spills, transportation of dangerous goods, noise, and vibration. Construction safety and liability will be explored in relation to the BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. This course will provide an understanding of the legal framework in BC for approvals, enforcement, penalties, liabilities and reporting requirements under selected applicable law. Case studies and guest speakers will be used to demonstrate the application of environmental and construction safety legislation.

CR05 | Environmental Friendly Projects (LEED Overview)
This course provides students with the tools to analyze an Environmental Engineering project by comparing and contrasting regulatory requirements and technical components with another Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) types of projects. Students will learn how to perform stakeholder consultation, methods used to evaluate impacts of a new or an existing project on ecosystems, conditions of acceptance of that project, and present critiques in a professional manner. In addition, students will learn about the most used standards in green construction projects, such as LEED and BREEAM, their uses, sections and applications.

PR01 | Developing Schedules and Reporting Using Primavera6 - Fundamentals
This course teaches students the basic features in Primavera 6 to be able to perform scheduling and planning. This course uses hands-on workshops that create and track an entire project to completion, using the three basic elements of project management:

PR02 | Developing Schedules and Reporting Using Primavera6 - Advanced

This course builds on the “Primavera6 - Fundamentals” course to help students learn about Primavera’s advanced scheduling and resource management tools, such as Schedule Comparison and Store Period Performance. Students will also learn how to create customized data, level resources, manage risks and much more. This course is designed to give P6 users a more in-depth, comprehensive look at Primavera Professional.

The course lessons will aid construction project managers in modifying multiple activities using global change, performing extensive earned-value analysis, importing/exporting project data, and scheduling multiple projects at once.


PM01 | Project Management Overview

This course provide the students with knowledge about the different methodologies used in the Project Management industry. The content of this course is based on the latest standards from the most reputable institution such as the Project Management Institute (PMI) and UK Axelos


PM02 | Bidding and Tender Documents Preparation

This course provides students with the knowledge necessary for them to participate in the preparation of a full tender documents package from all engineering disciplines, understand the different pricing models and methods in addition to helping their organization steer through the pre-qualification and bid phases and improve the chances of winning that bid. Topics include residential, commercial and civil infrastructure estimating methods, quantity takeoff techniques, and cost calculation procedures of construction components. An overview of the contract terms and relationships between the contractual parties will also be discussed in this course.


PM03 | Construction Projects Procurement and Contract Administration

The first week of the course examines construction procurement processes and administration. Topics include construction contracting methods, contractual relationship, types of contract, risk related to different contract type, request for proposal (RFP), bid invitation, bid evaluation, contract negotiation and award, contract administration. The second week of the course reviews practical application of basics of contract law as related to construction. Topics include contract law, contract changes, payment delays and claims, surety bonds; warranty, construction insurance; construction liens, labour law and union


PM04 | Construction Projects Scheduling and Budgeting

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to plan a construction project, schedule the use of project resources, recognize cost controls within the organization of the construction processes. Students will also learn to maintain construction change orders, record project data, and perform cost control functions. This Construction Scheduling and Budgeting course introduces project planning and scheduling, including the various types of schedules used in all types of projects with emphasis on the construction industry. The focus is on the sequencing of operations in a construction project and the effective use of schedules created from the decomposition of a work breakdown structure. The course covers in detail project planning, scheduling and control. Topics covered includeproject charter, developing work breakdown structure (WBS) and statement of work; developing project schedule; assign resource; perform resource and time constrained scheduling; estimate project cost and prepare project cost baseline; project monitoring and control; scheduling under uncertainty and computer application in project planning, scheduling and control.


PM05 | Construction Projects Risk Management

This course covers the fundamental aspects of analytical tools including the basic processes of risk planning, risk identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, risk response planning and risk monitoring and control. This course will help students become better construction project mangers by sailing their projects through challenging times by early preparing their projects and teams to those events. Students will learn the basic concepts of incorporating uncertainty into projects schedules and budges, being prepared with contingency plans and the effective use of contingency reserves. Topics covered in this course include understanding stakeholders tolerance of risk, using the most common templates for risk documentation, planning for risks in construction projects and implementing planned risk responses during the project execution. Tools and techniques of risk management will be studied and applied into small to major construction projects.


PM06 | Construction Quality Management

The main purpose of this course is to guide the student through the project quality management processes. The understanding and application of quality management concepts on both the project activities and products specification is crucial to construction project management. Topics in this course include quality planning, quality assurance, quality control, continuous quality improvement and integration of quality activities into project life cycle, tools and techniques of data collection, data analysis, statistical concepts and techniques in quality control and ISO 9000 series.


PM07 | Leadership and Communication for Project Managers

Managing a successful construction project involves more than schedules, templates, and paperwork. It requires the application of strong interpersonal management skills to work effectively with people in a variety of roles. This course will enable students to apply effective leadership strategies, improve your interpersonal communication, become more influential, help guide your staff through change, deal with conflict and practice ethical principles during the entire project management process.


PM08 | PMP and CAPM Exam Preparation

This intensive course integrates in-depth topic reviews with practicing hundreds of exam-like questions in addition to individual assistance from your PMP certified international instructor. You'll thoroughly review exam "trouble spots," use highly effective drills to accelerate your learning, receive invaluable test taking tips, and take a simulation exam at the end of the boot camp. This boot camp covers the knowledge areas, processes and techniques in the sixth edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as a crucial step in the preparation path for candidates aim to write the Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate exam. Our approach helps the candidates build a solid mental process of project management, which will enable them to become better project managers and rationalize correct answers during the exam.

Additionally, if you are an internationally educated engineer, this program is your opportunity to prepare yourself to enter the Canadian workforce. The Construction Project Management (CPM) Diploma program at Swenam College is designed to teach students how to manage various types of construction projects, including residential, industrial, commercial, and infrastructure projects. Students will learn about construction regulations and laws, environmental aspects, project management best practices, and working with different disciplines and trades. The program uses case studies, group work, and field trips to enhance learning. This program prepares students to initiate, plan, execute, monitor and control a project to ensure its success. The program also gives students a comprehensive foundation in project management and organizational management that applies to not-for-profit, for-profit and government organizations of all sizes. Graduates will have improved competitiveness as potential employees, primarily as Construction Project Managers or Construction Superintendents, also they will be prepared to obtain professional certification through the International Project Management Association (IPMA) or the Project Management Institute (PMI®).
